Forms/Fees: Friday, 19 April 2013 ($150 per form late fee after this date). (all fees not covered by Financial Aid). This is also the withdrawal deadline. After this date, you may also become liable for a pro-rated portion of the program fees.

Background

Students will be housed at the University of Georgia 's Center in North Oxford . The large, elegantly-furbished rooms hold two to four students and most have private bathrooms. Georgia students will also have associate membership in Keble College , which allows them to dine in college with Oxford students, have access to the College libraries, common rooms and pubs, and to participate in the College's social, cultural, and sporting societies and events.

Course Credit and Eligibility

Students will earn between twelve and fifteen semester hours in a wide variety of disciplines. During the first four weeks, classes will be taught by both UGA and Oxford faculty, using an intensive seminar format. During the remaining eight weeks, classes will be taught by Oxford faculty using the tutorial format, an intensive system of individualized or small-group instruction traditional at Oxford.

Costs

Approximately $7,900 plus twelve hours in-state UGA tuition and fees. The cost of the program covers room, most meals, study abroad insurance, Oxford fees, and associate membership at Keble College. Additional expenses include the cost of personal items and travel. A voluntary group-rate flight is available. Transient students are subject to an additional admission fee assessed by UGA Undergraduate Admissions.

Enrollment

The Franklin Fall Program is open to all majors! Students should provide a completed application form, two passport photos, and a refundable $600 application fee will be added to your UGA Student Account once the application has been received. Enrollment will be limited to 40 well-qualified students. Students are required to submit applications on or before Friday, March 15, 2013 ; applications will be accepted after this date only if all positions are not filled. Brief Descriptions of Dr. Bill Kretzschmar's Seminar Courses

ENGL (LING) 4190 / (LING) CLAS 2010: The focus of this course is English words, where they come from and how, including some treatment of linguistic and historical principles of word formation and borrowing in English. The course books will give us entree into the world of cultural humanism (as best practiced at Oxford and Cambridge) and into the OED.  Part of the work of the course will be to visit the OED, and to consider the role of "greats" and cultural humanism at Oxford and Cambridge as they helped to create our modern linguistic and intellectual environment.

ENGL 4890: This course provides an introduction to the study and theory of complex systems, with special focus on language as it is actually used by people in speech and writing. In Mitchell's (2009:13) definition, a complex system is "a system in which large networks of components with no central control and simple rules of operation give rise to complex collective behavior, sophisticated information processing, and adaptation via learning or evolution." Complex systems were originally described and are still used in the physical and biological sciences (e.g. Prigogine and Stengers 1984; Hawking and Mlodinow 2010, Gould 2003), somewhat later in computer science (e.g. Holland 1998). We will read Complexity: A Guided Tour, which offers a readable introduction to this new science. Complexity discusses topics like emergence and self-organization in computer science and genetics, and also connects complex systems to cultural topics like cooperation in society. We will extend ideas from the book to cultural studies and globalization, and especially to language as people use it. To that end, we will also read, in parallel with Mitchell, parts of my own The Linguistics of Speech and its sequel, Linguistics and Complex Systems. In the end, we will find that the interdisciplinary scope of the New Humanities, including new science and new technology, offers new and better ways to address human culture in its local settings and global interactions. 

Dr. Bill Kretzschmar

Professor Kretzschmar (Ph.D., University of Chicago, 1980) began his career as a medievalist (dissertation on Middle Scots poetry, medieval literary theory), and has over time become more associated with English Language Studies. He is the editor of the Linguistic Atlas Project, a national center for survey research on American English. He also has a long-term sociolinguistic field site in Roswell, GA, called Roswell Voices; that project is the first (and so far only) North American member of the European Union's Living Laboratories network, which promotes public/private partnerships involving technology and innovation. He was President of the American Dialect Society from 2007-2009. He edited the Journal of English Linguistics for fifteen years, and now serves on a number of editorial boards. He is coeditor of the Oxford Dictionary of Pronunciation for Current English (2001), and provides American pronunciations for the online Oxford English Dictionary and for various dictionaries in the Oxford US Dictionaries program. He has published numerous articles on medieval literature, American English, language variation, and humanities computing. His Handbook of the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States was published by the University of Chicago Press in 1993, and his Introduction to Quantitative Analysis of Linguistic Survey Data by Sage in 1996. A collection of essays from his UGA seminar on literary stylistics was published as a special issue of Language and Literature (2001). His The Linguistics of Speech, which demonstrates the relationship between language behavior and complexity science,  was published by Cambridge University Press (2009). He directed the UGA Linguistics Program (1996-99), and developed and served as the director of the UGA Computer/Information Literacy Program from 1999-2001. Currently he is pursuing his research and teaching on American English, language variation, and computer methods for description, analysis, and presentation of language data from literary and non-literary sources. His current work on the Atlas focuses on remaking its Web site to accommodate thousands of hours of audio as well as text materials

Tutorials Fall 2013

In the remaining eight-week session, classes will be taught by Oxford faculty using the one-on-one Oxford tutorial format where students meet with their dons in small groups and follow an intensive study course of research and writing. In more popular classes such as 'Shakespeare', students may expect to meet in a small group of 2-3 with the professor, but most tutorials are individualized. The semester curriculum at Oxford is tailored to individual student needs, so that students can make progress toward graduation while studying abroad. This accounts for the multitude of different courses offered. Besides the courses listed here we are able to offer numerous other options drawing on the rich faculty resources of Oxford University . Please contact our office if you are considering participating on a semester program and would like to discuss the possibility of taking a course at Oxford not listed below.
