CMLT (AFAM)(AFST)(LACS)(GEOG) 4260: The Black and Green Atlantic: Crosscurrents of the African and Irish Diasporas.

CMLT 4260 satisfies both the UGA Cultural Diversity, and Franklin College Multicultural requirements.

This course explores the connections that have defined the “Black and Green Atlantic” in culture, politics, race, gender, and labor. It brings together work on the comparative dimensions of Black and Irish experiences in the Atlantic world that seeks to transcend the limiting boundaries of national and even hemispheric histories. It focuses on cultural production emanating mainly from the United States, Africa, Britain, the Caribbean, and Ireland.  Included are works by established and emerging scholars, in tandem with a broad range of texts––novels, autobiographies, laws, political screeds, music, plays, poetry, movies, etc. Our methodological approach will be comparative, interdisciplinary, and transnational. Dispelling spurious claims of equivalency, the course draws on comparisons between the Black and Green Atlantics that go beyond the usual “influence” model. The ultimate aim is to reach a better understanding of the divergent racialization processes at work in the nineteenth-century Atlantic world and beyond.

(A field trip to Liverpool, one of the epicenters of both the Black and Green Atlantics, is planned.)

Tutorials

In the remaining eight-week session, classes will be taught by Oxford faculty using the one-on-one Oxford tutorial format where students meet with their tutors in small groups and follow an intensive study course of research and writing. In more popular classes such as 'Shakespeare', students may expect to meet in a small group of 2-3 with the professor, but most tutorials are individualized. The semester curriculum at Oxford is tailored to individual student needs, so that students can make progress toward graduation while studying abroad. This accounts for the multitude of different courses offered. Besides the courses listed here we are able to offer numerous other options drawing on the rich faculty resources of Oxford University. Please contact our office if you are considering participating on a semester program and would like to discuss the possibility of taking a course at Oxford not listed here.

Famous Oxford graduates include Oscar Wilde, author, Lawrence of Arabia, soldier and diplomat, Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, Prime Ministers of India, Stephen Hawking, theoretical physicist, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and Theresa May, British Prime Ministers, and Tim Berners Lee, inventor of the internet.

JRLC 5080: International Mass Communication

Students in JRLC 5080, International Mass Communication, will be challenged to understand and analyze the interconnectedness of 21st century global communication, encompassing journalism, advertising and public relations, and entertainment media. Students will read about intercultural communication, human travel and communication networks (which tend to be regional rather than global), and digital distribution of media messages. Particular attention will be paid to international entertainment media. For example, the class will study fantasy fiction from Alice in Wonderland to His Dark Materials, noting Oxford’s role in the genre and explaining why fantasy literature so easily transcends geographical, temporal, and cultural barriers while other media messages struggle to compete. In addition, potential (not confirmed) site visits include Manchester for a tour of the football stadium and program about sport promotion, and to visit Media City; and Cardiff, Wales, to tour the BBC news facility.
